You are required to pay a fee to get your restricted ignition interlock license when you enter the program and again to get a full license once you have been cleared of the restriction. Maryland also requires that you return to the interlock provider every 30 days.  Failing to do so can get you removed from the program and require you to serve the full period of license suspension. You may also be required to obtain an ignition interlock device on multiple vehicles.  Generally, the device must be installed on every vehicle in the household.

If the cost of interlock system Maryland causes financial hardship, Maryland state driving laws offer a program for low-income drivers. You will need to provide documents to the installer that prove your financial hardship, such as SSI or SNAP records. A hearing will be scheduled to determine your eligibility for the program.

Ignition Interlock Program

Ignition Interlock Program in Maryland

The Maryland Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) runs the Maryland ignition interlock program. To be eligible for the Maryland Ignition Interlock Program, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Not already have a suspended, revoked, canceled or refused license
  • Have the ignition interlock system installed within 30 days of receiving an order of suspension.
  • Surrender your Maryland driver’s license (or sign a certified statement that it is no longer in your possession).
  • Complete a form, in writing, which you return along with an enrollment form from the service provider to a full-service MVA office (you cannot use the MVA kiosk).

You cannot drive commercially while enrolled in the ignition interlock program—periods of enrollment range from 180 days to a year. Your enrollment period may be extended if you violate the program. Any month in which you have a violation (which includes trying to start the vehicle without blowing into the interlock device, not submitting to a rolling restart, failing to appear for calibration) will not count towards your period of enrollment. If you have four violations in a row, you will be terminated from the program.

Maryland Ignition Interlock Device Laws

DUI laws in Maryland reflect a strong desire to use ignition interlocks to reduce drunk driving. In addition to opting in, since 2016 (Noah’s Law), drivers have been required to participate for the following reasons:

  • Driving while Intoxicated with a child under 16 in the car
  • Refusing to take a breathalyzer test
  • Causing an accident in which somebody is killed or experiences life-threatening injuries.

Maryland ignition interlock device laws allow an immediate administrative license suspension if you are stopped on suspicion of DUI or DWI and fail or refuse a test. They also allow for fines and jail time as well as license suspension that can be for as long as one year.
