There are plenty of reasons to try to keep ignition interlock devices clean and sanitized. Like anything you encounter frequently, your interlock device has the potential to harbor bacteria and viruses. We propose a simple solution to avoid this ignition interlock problem.

We like to help our customers stay safe and healthy. Whether you’re trying to avoid catching a bug during cold, flu, and virus season or you just love a clean car, here’s your guide to a clean ignition interlock system:

Keep a stockpile of extra mouthpieces

If possible, keep a supply of extra mouthpieces for your interlock device on hand to avoid sharing. This will also increase cleanliness even if you’re the only one using the device.

You should also clean your mouthpiece regularly. Warm water, soap, and a little time spent drying out should do the trick. Surface germs pose a sizable risk in contained spaces like passenger cars.

When someone else is driving

It’s doubly important to clean the exterior of your ignition interlock device if someone else will be driving your car. This is also an ideal time to break out one of those extra mouthpieces. At the very least, you’ll need a freshly sanitized one.

Keep the interlock device dry

This is one of the most crucial aspects of cleaning an interlock device. Regardless of how you choose to go about sanitization, the device must stay dry.

Service appointments

You can always ask the technician for your upcoming service appointment to clean your ignition interlock device for you. And, since they’re experienced, you can rest assured knowing that your interlock device will still function as intended.

Cleaning Ignition Interlock System On your own

Sometimes, you may need to clean an ignition interlock device between service appointments. This is especially true if you’re actively trying to sanitize the device and prevent the spread of illnesses. Don’t be afraid to sanitize your ignition interlock system.

If you choose to clean your interlock device by yourself:

  • DO use a clean cloth to wipe down the ignition interlock’s surface
  • DO make sure the cloth is lightly dampened
  • DON’T put liquid down inside of the device
  • DO use disposable alcohol wipes only.
  • DON’T use any wipes containing other chemicals for cleaning, including common ones such as Lysol® or Clorox®.
  • DO let the handset dry by placing it out in the open air for at least 15 minutes.
