Once your device is installed, there are steps you can take to avoid having ignition interlock device malfunction. Taking care of your device keeps you on the road and going where you need to go. A device that isn’t working correctly can interfere with getting to work and other obligations.

At RoadGuard Interlock, we know how important a properly working device is. We’re committed to helping you stay safe and compliant. Here are six ways you can avoid having your ignition interlock malfunction.

1. Keep the Device Clean and Dry to Avoid Ignition Interlock Malfunction

At your service appointments, you can ask the technician to clean your ignition interlock device for you. In the meantime, if you need to clean your device:

  • Do use a clean, lightly dampened cloth to wipe down the device.
  • Don’t clean your device with anything other than water.

2. Plan Ahead

Using an interlock ignition device can take some getting used to. You’ll need to plan ahead before driving, because some foods and cosmetics may interfere with the ignition interlock device.

  • Don’t eat, drink, or use tobacco products 15 minutes before using your device.
    • Since you may be asked to do a random retest while on the road, you should also avoid these activities while driving.
  • Do drink water any time you’d like. Water is the exception and will not affect using your device.

In addition, there are other things that will set off an interlock device. Keep any products containing alcohol away from your device. These products can include mouthwash, hand sanitizers, and hairspray. Check the labels on any cosmetics or hygiene products you use regularly.

3. Leave the Tamper-Evident Label Alone

Removing the label is a violation, so don’t try to take it off.

  • Do keep the label intact.
  • Don’t disturb the label when wiping down your device.

4. Store the Device in Its Holder

You can avoid unnecessary wear and tear by properly storing your device after each use.

  • Do place your ignition interlock device in its holder after each use. Doing so keeps the device clean and protects it from damage.
  • Don’t place your device on a seat or the floor. If the device falls or moves around, it could interfere with your ability to use the accelerator or brake pedal.

5. Use Care When Doing Random Retests

The device may prompt you to perform a random retest while you’re driving. Refusing to test is one of the things that will set off an interlock device.

  • Do pull over to perform retests.
  • Don’t compromise your safety or the safety of others. Use your best judgment when using your device for random retests.

6. Know When to Call a Service Technician

Don’t ever attempt to fix your interlock ignition device by yourself. Doing so, at the very least, invalidates your installation. It may trigger an ignition interlock malfunction.

If you try to fix your device, these actions may be recorded and reported to your monitoring agency. Your attempts to repair the device could be perceived as tampering.

If you’ve followed all five steps listed above and still have problems, please give us a call. Let one of our qualified service technicians handle any diagnostics or repairs.
