What Day of the Year has the Most DUI Arrests?

Curious what day of the year has the most DUI arrests? With more parties and days off work, more drinking and driving occurs over the holidays. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving has been given the name “Blackout Wednesday” because of the tendency for people to binge drink, get behind the wheel, and get arrested. DUI arrests are the highest between Thanksgiving and the end of New Year’s weekend.

In particular, the days around Thanksgiving will have the highest number of DUI arrests. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Thanksgiving weekend is the most dangerous holiday to be on the road.

Another time of year that has a high number of DUI arrests is the Fourth of July weekend. For many people, alcohol is at the center of their celebration. According to an analysis by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, July 4th had the second-highest percentage of car crash deaths that were linked to alcohol, and July 3rd was also in the top 10.

Drunk Driving Arrests are a Big Problem

The Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates 1,001,329 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics in 2018. This works out to one arrest for about every 227 licensed drivers in the United States. That’s a big problem. When you choose to get behind the wheel intoxicated, you are not only putting yourself at risk, you are also putting innocent people at risk. There are numerous rideshare apps available to ensure you get home safely. Setting up a designated driver for the night is also a great option. Remember, it’s not worth the risk and the consequences that follow if you are arrested.
